Lioncage: The Second Strike

Lioncage was founded in 2013 by Thorsten Bertermann (vocals), Torsten Landsberger (drums) and Lars König (guitar & mix). After a couple of years of song-writing and recording demos, their debut album Done At Last gained a release in Europe and Japan. The band cites bands such as Toto, Foreigner, Journey, Huey Lewis, Genesis, Yes, Paul Carrack and Chicago as influences. Which may well give one the correct impression that The Second Strike may well not exactly be akin to Cannibal Corpse.The band had friends on hand to help on this record; bass guitar was handled by Lars Slowak, Sven Zimmermann, Andreas Laude-Schwedewsky and Dirk Meyer, keyboards by Mitch Knauer and Shanger Ohl, and backing vocals by Madeleine Lang, Anja Bublitz, Olaf Senkbeiland Billy King. Noted studio musicianTim Pierce, (Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Rascal Flatts, Joe Cocker, Rick Springfield, Elton John etc.) took over some guitar parts on the track "Secrets".

The Second Strike is a tasty slab of Westcoast AOR which at times transcends the fluffy MOR confines of the genre especially on the guitar solo in "Save the Day" which closes the album. At the other end of the platter "Mysterious Angel" sets things off in a typically tasteful and tuneful manner which will absolutely find favour with fans of all things Westcoast but may be too polite for those looking for something with real balls. That is often the way with artists who operate within such small genres which is a bit of a shame as this is a collection of good songs well played and well-presented and is deserving of wider acclaim.
