Damnations Day: A World Awakens

Despite having to deal with such a tough local market there are some true gems to be found when looking through the ever growing list of Australian metal groups, and another that has it all together is Damnations Day. A World Awakens is the second album by this melodic progressive metal group from the southeast state of Victoria. Damnations Day's line-up is that of Mark Kennedy on vocals and rhythm guitar with his brother Dean Kennedy (Teramaze) on the drums, and Jon King on lead guitar. Whilst on the bass for A World Awakens is Dean Wells another member of Teramaze, Dean was also the producer for this one and Damnations Day's first album from 2013 Invisible, The Dead. Not having listened to their debut I didn't know what I was in for, and I sure wasn't turned off by what I heard from Damnations Day's powerful follow up album thanks to top tracks like "Colours Of Darkenss" and that great mix of melodies and metallic hooks. Inspiring thoughts of groups like Evergrey, and whilst on the instrument front the performances are impressive Damnations Day strongest asset is the adaptable vocals of Mark Kennedy, working so effectively with the varied material it all makes for one appealing new metal album.

Damnations Day: A World Awakens

My Score:

A World Awakens is the second album from powerhouse progressive metal act Damnations Day, released on the acclaimed label Sensory, a division of The Lasers Edge. Containing nine tracks, A World Awakens hits hard and doesn't overstay its welcome, and with expert production, mixing and mastering from Dean Wells (guitarist from Teramaze, who also plays bass on this album) and Jacob Hansen, you just know it's going to be a fantastic sounding album. Vocalist/guitarist Mark Kennedy has some serious pipes, his Geoff Tate-meets-Myles Kennedy styled firepower soars all over standout tracks such as "Dissecting the Soul", "To Begin Again", and the "Witness", while his brother, and current Teramaze member Dean Kennedy flails away underneath. Lead guitarist Jon King also displays plenty of sizzle throughout the album, blazing a wild trail in the textured "Colours of Darkness" and the melodic progressive metal of "I Pray".

Honestly, if you love bands like Tomorrow's Eve, Alter Bridge, Dream Theater, Circus Maximus, and even Nevermore, A World Awakens will be a welcome addition to your metal music collection.
