Alunah: Solennial

British doom act Alunah not only have a new album in the form of their fourth release, Solennial, but also now find themselves on the very eclectic roster over at Svart Records, a good home to be for any up and coming band these days. Solennial contains eight tracks created by the line-up of Sophie Day (vocals, guitar), David Day (guitar), Daniel Burchmore (bass), and Jake Mason (drums), and once again shows the bands love of atmospheric doom clearly influenced by their love of fellow Birmingham legends Black Sabbath as well as Pentagram, Jex Thoth, Opeth, Led Zeppelin, Hexvessel, and Deep Purple. Sophie's angelic yet ominous vocals are the perfect foil for the crushing, doom laden riffs and lilting folk based chords, with tunes like "The Reckoning of Time" and "Light of Winter" packing plenty of power but also lush & pastoral in spots. Mountains of fuzz permeate the heavy "Fire of Thornborough Henge" as well as the massive stomp of "Lugh's Assembly ", but it's the bands ability to mix those booming riffs with tasty lead guitar & soaring vocals that sets them apart from other female fronted doom acts, which you can hear clearly on the wonderful "Feast of Torches" and the lengthy closer "A Forest".

Solennial is a very enjoyable slab or organic doom, filled with dreamy vocals and lots of crushing riffs, Alunah certainly making a strong opening statement on their inaugural release for Svart Records. Recommended.
