Englund,Thobbe: Sold My Soul

Former Sabaton guitarist, Thobbe Englund, has resurfaced with a new solo release entitled, Sold My Soul (Metalville Records). This 11 track Neo Classical Shredfest of an album leans towards the more traditional Metal days with a straight ahead approach and a couple of nods to the old school.

Englund provides the vocals as well and on the title track, "Sold My Soul" he channels his inner Rob Halford on a track that reminds of Fight and Halford solo projects more than Priest. "The Glow" sounds so much like the doom of 1972 Black Sabbath that it is complete with vinyl crackles and pops and makes you wonder which Sabbath song he is covering! "Steel & Thunder" lures you into thinking that the classic KISS' song Love Gun is coming from the song's opening chords. Also not to be outdone with wearing his influences on his sleeve, "Steel & Thunder" also has the melody line of the Uriah Heep classic, "Easy Livin' " in its verses!

Sold My Soul does not offer much in the way originality, but it is a way to pay homage to Englund's influences and to the Metal path of which he grew up. Yngwie licks are overflowing all over the record but none better than on the short instrumental offering, "The Flame". Songs are decent, not great by any stretch and his guitar playing is up to snuff but in the, "I've heard all of this before" sort of way. Thobbe Englund set out to make an old school Metal record saluting his roots and that is what you have here.
