The third solo album from Free / Bad Company drummer Simon Kirke, All Because of You follows on from 2005's Seven Rays of Hope and 2011's Filling The Void and finds him backed by Chicago based session band Empty Pockets. Not that he sticks to just drums and vocals as these aside Kirke also contributes guitar, keyboard and ukulele (yes, really) and ropes in Warren Hayes (Allman Brothers, Gov't Mule) to lend some weighty guitar to 'Trouble Road'. This aforementioned track aside for the most part All Because of You offers a mellow, easy-listening experience with the material echoing the singer-songwriter albums of the 1970's and very much on the lighter side of the rock spectrum.
But whilst the album may be lacking in the muscular drumming department for which Kirke is renowned it is nevertheless pleasant enough on the ears - albeit admittedly the twee 'Friends in the Woods' with its nod to badgers, hedgehogs and all manner of assorted woodland creatures may be too much for some. The ukulele led strum through 'Feel Like Making Love' is a considered acknowledgment of his past without coming anywhere close to the moody dramatics of the original. The smooth 'Warm Gulf Waters' and orchestrated romance of 'Maria' suggest Kirke is comfortable with his lot and there are certainly no aching cries of anguish to be found here.
