Hadal Maw: OLM

I have to admit, the press release that accompanied OLM nailed it pretty well; "For fans of Psycroptic, Meshuggah, Necrophagist and Decapitated", and since I'm sure there are a lot of extreme metal fans out there who admire all those bands, I can safely say that Australia's Hadal Maw won't disappoint here on their latest EVP Records release. OLM contains 10 tracks of crushing death metal littered with atmosphere, groove, and plenty of technical passages. With the enormous bottom heavy thump & barking styled vocals of Meshuggah to the intricate guitar mayhem of Psycroptic and Decapitated, Hadal Maw have picked some cool influences and delivered a brutal platter of death metal that crushes as well as intrigues the senses. Just listen to those wild drum acrobatics flail away underneath massive grooves and lethal guitar riffs on "Failed Harvest", the booming start/stop arrangements of "Witch Doctor", the sizzling technical mastery of "Affluenza" and "False King", or the textured prog/tech/death that is the lengthy "Simian Plague" for fine examples of the solid metal these guys are cranking out. For out and out headbangers, there's also "Germinate" and "Circus of Flesh", two tracks with killer riffs and those monstrous Meshuggah influenced grooves. Though perhaps a track or two could have been clipped off to keep this a tad less lengthy, there's still plenty to recommend here for anyone who loves technical, progressive, groove laden death metal with a touch of djent for good measure.
