The Fall: Sub-Lingual Tablet

Here is another interesting find. The band is The Fall and unbeknownst to me have been around since 1976 and have released a whopping thirty-one studio albums. I am a little surprised I was not familiar with the UK band in the late '70s as they were heavily involved in the punk rock scene at the time. Over the years the band has seen various lineup changes with the one constant being the band co-founder and vocalist Mark E. Smith. The rest of the current lineup is Dave Spurr (bass), Peter Greenway (guitar), Kieron Melling and Daren Garratt (drums) and Eleni Poulou (synths).

The post punk rock revivalists latest disc is titled Sub-Lingual Tablet and it is clear this band is following to the beat of their own drum, or should I say drums as the band employs two drummers. The punky alternative rock of "Venice With The Girls" begins the disc with bashing guitar chords and an energetic groove. The next track "Black Roof" is a strange one, very off kilter and quirky with numerous change ups in its short running time. Captain Beefheart came to mind while listening to this one. A heavy bass riff begins "Dedication Not Medication", a tune featuring an ultra-heavy low end and Smith's slurring lead vocals. The music borders on post punk chaos while still retaining its strong groove.

"Stout Man" is a raving cover of The Stooges "Cock in my Pocket", pasted with heavy guitar riffs and drunkenly slurred vocals while the ten minute "Auto Chip 2014-2016" is more trippy guitar jam than anything else. Cool tune for sure.

The album ends with the catchy punk rock urgency of "Quit iPhone", a shout out against the use of social media.

While Smith's vocals will certainly be an acquired taste, much like Captain Beefheart, the music is both urgent and vibrant, a vital reminder of the punk rock movement all those years ago.
