Douglas, Nick: Regenerations
New Jersey native, Nick Douglas, is best known for his Bass player stints in Metal outfits Doro Pesch (Warlock), Chris Caffery's solo band (TSO, Savatage) and one time Iron Maiden frontman, Blaze Bailey's band Blaze. Manning nearly all the instruments on his solo disc entitled, Regenerations, Douglas breaks away from his metallic roots to show a lighter, more Singer/Songwriter side of his Rock abilities.
Opening track, "Come Alive" has an almost chilling vibe to it, with piano lining the score underneath. Douglas' vocals are calling for your attention in a straining yet controlled way. "All On Me" is a mush poppier, upbeat tune that reminds me of Butch Walker's type of Power Pop with a very catchy hook and is very "radio friendly". Stand out track for me is easily, "You Break", a somber, haunting song that reeks of pain and anguish from a relationship. While the New Age(y) "Blue" features a soothing and encouraging vocal delivered by Rebecca Gowarty and is a nice departure from the other 10 tracks and an interesting way to end this solo works.
What is delivered on Regenerations is an 11 song collection of modern Pop songs fused with a melancholy 90's Alternative vibe (think Ryan Adams meets Mathew Sweet meets an Alice In Chains like angst) that makes a great listen. Songs are short and to the point without much fluff and Nick Douglas' vocals are passionately delivered throughout. Songs are calming, emotive and with reverence and will hold much meaning for a lot of people, especially the more that you listen, as layers seem to appear with each listen that you didn't pick up on the run through. Nick Douglas' solo record Regenerations is much deeper of a listen than you realize upon pressing play.
