Bloodbound: War of Dragons

Bloodbound are a remarkably resilient bunch of chaps especially given their tremendous propensity for changing lead singers every three seconds; they have managed to build a very impressive back catalogue, my favourite of which remains the marginally more traditional metal Unholy Cross album from 2011. War of Dragons is the studio follow up to 2014's mighty fine Stormborn although last year saw the release of One Night of Blood and a tour with Sabaton and Alestorm, a tour which I caught, primarily to see Bloodbound for the first time.

War of Dragons will not disappoint long term fans of the band as it is similar yet different to their previous output. At times ("Stand and Fight" for instance) Bloodbound touch upon Rhapsody (of Fire?) territory whilst at others they eve plant their flag on Gloryhammer's cheese-based power metal landscape. On "Fallen Heroes" they show exactly what they've learned from spending time with Sabaton so it's a quite varied if slightly derivative album. Furthermore, I would venture to suggest that if you're one of those people who like their metal to be dominated by guitars you be slightly irked as the key instrument here is Fredrik Bergh's keyboards and yes there are songs called "Tears Of A Dragonheart", "War of Dragons" and "Dragons Are Forever" in 2017 but hey, they're pulled off which such panache that it is difficult not to go with the flow and enjoy!

Bloodbound: War of Dragons
Posted by Pete Pardo, SoT Staff Writer on 2017-08-01 19:47:17
My Score:

Bloodbound has always been one of those power metal acts that I've liked from a distance but never fully got embroiled in their music. That's due to a number of reasons, but the main one mainly is that I've always felt their music was a bit derivative of so many other power metal acts in recent memory. War of Dragons however has really resonated with me a bit more than previous efforts; it's heavier, the songs are slower and less reliant on typical speed/power metal trappings, the songs are catchy, there is an abundance of symphonic keyboards, and the album overall is pretty damn engaging. It's hard to resist anthems such as "Silver Wings", "King of Swords" (killer lead guitar work!), "Battle in the Sky", or the incredible "Tears of the DragonHeart". And "Symphony Satana" ? Way cool, and crushingly heavy. "Fallen Heroes" even ventures, dare I say, into somewhat proggy waters, allowing Bloodbound to really show off their formidable musical chops. Vocals are also excellent, both lead & backing, and when you throw in that glorious cover art work, well, this ones a winner no matter what way you look at it.
