In the Company of Serpents: Ain- Soph Aur

The dynamic duo from Denver, the doomsters known as In the Company of Serpents, are back with their latest platter of distorted sludge, titled Ain-Soph Aur, which translates to 'Limitless Light'. Grant Netzorg (guitar, vocals) and Joseph Weller Myer (drums) have written a half-dozen tracks for this new album, their tortured brand of psychedelic, sludge laden doom heavier than ever, the duo able to create a huge wall of sound with just guitar, drums, and vocals, the impact happening immediately on the booming opener "Middle Pillar", complete with thunderous fuzz toned riffs and anguished vocals. Don't let the acoustic tones of the brief "Nothingness" lull you to sleep, as the band segue right into the slow builder "Crucible", a bluesy/psych number that shows a completely different side to the group, chilling and atmospheric. The gentle strains of "Limitless Nothingness" leads into "Limitless Light", a slow, punishing wrecker complete with massive riffing and Netzorg's tortured wailing. Myer's drums crash and plod for nearly 13-minutes of agonizing doom, easily the heaviest dirge on the album.

Overall, Ain-Soph Aur is a more varied platter from In the Company of Serpents, the band opting to go into more atmospheric & textured territory rather than full on doom for the duration. For some that might not sit too well, for others the added diversity will be a plus. You be the judge.
