Witherfall: Nocturnes And Requiems

Nocturnes And Requiems is the excellent debut album by Los Angeles based metal group Witherfall. Appearing on the album are guitarist Jake Dreyer (Iced Earth, Kobra And The Lotus, White Wizzard) who shreds it up big time on this album, vocalist/keyboards Joseph Michael (White Wizzard), drummer Adam Sagan (Circle II Circle, Into Eternity) and bass player Anthony Crawford (Alan Holdsworth, Virgil Donati). The release of your debut is supposed to be an exciting time but for Witherfall it sure can't have been an easy journey, as drummer Adam Sagan whom had serious health issues passed away at the end of 2016. Adam was a very talented/dynamic and diverse player as demonstrated on Nocturnes And Requiems and no doubt Adam's input on the drums and elsewhere on this album helped to make it the great release that it is.

Witherfall plays melodic progressive metal and then some, and according to their Facebook page they have a vast list of influences, that is "King Diamond, Nevermore, Pink Floyd, Savatage, Opeth, Type O Negative, Emperor, Queen, Sebastion Bach, Dream Theater, Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Paul Gilbert (Cacophony/ Racer X), Yngwie, Paco De Lucia, Al Di Meola, Cryptopsy, Death, Chopin, Litszt and Mozart". The darkened themed album artwork by Kristian Wahlin (King Diamond, Bathory, The Black Dahlia Murder, Wintersun) certainly fits well with the material on this album. From the stirring and alternating metal of "Potrait" to the captivating exhilarating metal/lighter acoustic combination of "Nobody Sleeps Here" Nocturnes And Requiems is such a striking album you would think that this talented band had been together for many years with multiple full length albums to their name. With eight tracks and although two are quite short there are multiple extended inclusions as Witherfall have you totally absorbed with this shifting and exciting musical outing. Witherfall put so much in and it comes out sounding fantastic, Nocturnes And Requiems is a must buy for fans of great technical metal.
