The Murder of My Sweet: Echoes of the Aftermath

This is the third album by The Murder of My Sweet and I appear to have had first dibs on all of them amongst the SoT staff. About their previous album, the brilliantly named, Beth Out of Hell, I said, "If bombast, over-the-top arrangements allied to songs which weave their magic over time float your metaphorical boat then you may well be interested in this one." Echoes of the Aftermath is essentially more of the same huge production seriously, there's only four people in the band and one of them (Angelica Rylin) only sings.

There is a more dreamlike quality to this album compared to Beth Out of Hell which was full on bombast and in a way I miss the slightly more aggressive edge although "Personal Hell" has a nice oomph to it. As is often the way with female-fronted symphonic metal bands when compared to the giants of the genre (Nightwish, Within Temptation, etc) it's the lack of a signature hit song which is the difference between good and great. Echoes of the Aftermath is a good album which will definitely reward repeated listens over time.
