Bassana, Sula: Shipwrecked
Sula Bassana aka Dave Schmidt has been involved in the German krautrock/psychedelic scene for many years now. Zone Six, Twilight Network, Liquid Visions, Growing Seeds, Solaris, Electric Orange and Weltraumstaunen are a few examples of projects he has been involved with. In 2002 Bassana released his first solo album Dreamer and in 2016 came out with his sixth album Shipwrecked.
Bassana does everything himself playing synthesizer, organ, drumbox, guitar and toy-mandolin as well as recording and mixing the album.
Those interested in electron music will find much to love here beginning with the lead off track "Moonbase Alpha Alpha" where subtle effects and Mission Control voice samples stating "The Eagle has landed" are really quite riveting especially when the ending words eventually fade into the music. Electronic percussion and layers of synths build slowly adding textural components around the repeating sequence allowing the music to really settle in before the ending drone-like synths bring the song to a close. "Shushie Express" is a little slower but just as trippy with unearthly synth layerings and pulsing electronics. "No Time : No Eternity" has a darker feel and is much more unsettling whereas "Planeta Bur" incorporates subtle Eastern elements to the synth layers. The chiming sounds and melancholic synth strings highlight the somber title track before the album ends with the ambient "No Way", perhaps the moodiest track.
This is a mellow yet dense recording that will hypnotize the listener into submission if you let it. Certainly fans of Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk will appreciate the experience. Highly recommended.
