ThrOes: This Viper Womb
ThrOes is largely the project of Trent Griggs, an Australian metal musician who wants to push against all expectations. He calls his style Dissident Metal and the point is to provoke and, possibly, to annoy. To round out the band, Griggs draws on the talents of James Ludbrook, an Australian metal scene vocalist, and drummer Devin Talley (Suffocation and many others). Although Griggs eschews strict genre designations or easy notions of influence, this album might appeal to fans of Bethlehem, Shining, or Killing Joke, at least those are the bands listed in the promo material. I think I can see why those specific connections are made, but I really have to credit Griggs for putting together a collection of songs that don't bring to mind any one style or influence. The music is as fierce as it is relentless. Listening to this album is honestly exhausting but there are moments of power and insight if you can muster the patience to get through the whole thing. I know that sounds harsh, but this album takes extra effort, something that should ultimately please the band. After all, if your point is provoke with purpose, the music needs to give listeners something to chew on. In that sense, ThrOes succeeds. I didn't love this album, but I can still admire what it's trying to do. For me, the title track and the closing track were the best. They are also the calmest tracks in the bunch.
