Nihilreich: The Loom of Time

I've listened to this album several times since its release in December 2016. With each listen, I like the album even more but I can never quite put my reasons into words. The band creates music that blends black, death, and doom and then puts that mixture into a larger body of rock and heavy metal music. The result is something that is at once nostalgic and fresh, stately and raw. This is music on the move, music that won't slow down for anything. It's a celebration of classic sounds and an exploration of what the band can do with it. Overall, Nihilreich sounds pretty good. For a debut album, the band certainly shows off enough energy and power. But if things are both powerful and heavy, they are also restless and searching, as if the band hasn't quite settled on their sound. This may not be a bad thing; blending styles is important and this band certainly does it well. However, I'm also curious about future songwriting practices and what they'll bring to this up-and-coming band. In the end, I found the album strong, exciting, and exhausting. I look forward to discovering more of what this band has to offer.
