Peikli, Felix & Joe Doubleday: It's Showtime!

Felix Peikli (clarinet) and Joseph Doubleday (vibraphone) are virtuosos on their chosen instruments. On this recording titled It's Showtime! the duo is joined by Rossano Sportiello (piano), Russell Hall (acoustic bass) and Ralph Peterson Jr. (drums). Charles Turner adds vocals on one track.

The band lovingly treats these standards in a thoughtful and respectful way yet adding their own virtuosity to these timeless melodies. There are many solos to be had with vibraphone and clarinet taking the lead often but the other musicians are excellent as well and are never left to their own devices. This is truly a 'band' effort and the music is all the better for it. The playful interplay between these musicians is really wonderful to hear. The first track "After You're Gone", originally penned by Turner Layton is a joyous experience with infectious rhythms and wonderful clarinet, piano and vibraphone solos. This song exudes happiness. Richard Rodgers' "There's a Small Hotel" is slower and more languid with a lazy groove dripping with nostalgia perfectly captured by the band. The occasional shifts in tempo really demonstrate first class musicianship. "Pure Imagination" is another excellent track showing the band's romantic side. I could go on but I will let you discover the rest of these gems for yourself. For old time jazz fans It's Showtime! will be essential listening.
