Schulze, Klaus: Another Green Mile

For those into electronic music you are likely familiar with the German musician/composer Klaus Schulze. His discography is extensive and way too massive to go through individually. In 2002 he released the 5 CD boxset Another Green Mile. This was a limited release and because many fans did not hear it the first time around Schulze has released the third CD in the set as a single disc. Besides the five songs that were on the original recording you also get the bonus track "Voice 'n' Harmony".

The album plays as one seventy minute track although they can be listened to individually. The first track "Between Twilight and Dawn" combines ambient and neoclassical soundscapes with Schulze's keyboards providing a sound collage over which the oboe has a vital role. Both components blend together giving an ethereal texture to the sound. A solitary drum beat acts as a tentative precursor to a more realized role in the next track "In the Streets, in the Rain" where the electronic percussion adds another dimension as do the wordless vocals. This tune is more in the realm of what we have come to expect from Schulze, a quiet intense blanket of sound. The complexity continues to increase as treated guitar and cello take on prominent roles in the other worldly "The Wisdom of the Leaves". The twenty-eight minute "Follow Me Down, Follow Me Down" is the album highlight for me. Crisp electronic percussion and repeating synth patterns bring to mind classic Schulze. The moody guitar playing of Mickes, sometimes in the form of razor-like metallic shards and the bizarre sampled vocalizations also add to the song's unyielding spacey vibe.

If you are a fan of Schulze and didn't invest in the original boxset Another Green Mile will be a mandatory purchase.
