Don't let the short symphonic "Intro" with female chanting falsely convince you that Deserted Fear have gone all Nightwish on us, as Century Media's first release of 2017 sees the German death metal trio doing what they do best once again here on their third album. Vocalist/guitarist Manuel Glatter, guitarist/bassist Fabian Hildebrandt, and drummer Simon Mengs have crafted some tasty melodic death metal for Dead Shores Rising featuring plenty of chugging riffs, twin guitar harmonies, and growling vocals with a slight touch of bellow in spots. "The Edge of Insanity" hits hard with some sledgehammer drumming and hefty riffs, while "The Fall Of Leaden Skies" is as classy as death metal gets, the twin guitar melodies shining through some brutal arrangements to great effect. "Open Their Gates" simply crushes, and might be my favorite track here, but at just over 3 minutes it's over almost too quickly. The kick ass rhythms and riffs of "Corrosion of Souls" are just infectious, as they are on the brutal "The Carnage", but the band even outdoes the great Amon Amarth on the lethal "Till the Last Drop", a great example of Viking styled death metal that works on every level. Even closer "Carry On" has that 'epic' feel, which will surely appeal to fans of the Swedish veterans.
Dead Shores Rising is nicely done, a very solid set of crushing melodic death metal songs that any fan of extreme music should enjoy. Century Media have kicked off the new year in a big way with this barnburner!
