Professor Tip Top: Exobiology

Professor Tip Top is a another new discovery for me. The band hails from Bergen, Norway and to my knowledge has three albums to their credit; Are You Empirical (2011), Aoum (2012) and their latest offering Exobiology (2016).

In the band are Svein Magnar Hansen (vocals), Sam Fossbakk (guitar, EMS synthi VCO3, Rhodes, Arp Axxe, Minimoog, Mellotron, vocals), Stein Høgseth (bass) and David Sundby (drums).

For those of you who like late '60s or early '70s psychedelic and space rock music in the vein of Pink Floyd, Gong, et all, Exobiology should be an album that you will enjoy very much. Beginning with the title track the '70s are alive and well as the bands love of analog synths is readily apparent. Washes of keys, burbles of synths and atmospheric guitar meld together in pure space rock bliss. The lead vocals are perhaps a bit monotone here but this is a minor complaint as Hansen still has a good voice ideally suited for the genre. On "Procrastination Song" the tempo is slow and there are more psychedelic overtones as this one harkens back to early Floyd as does the heavier guitar and synth jam of "When The Stars Were New". The gentle flow of the spacey "Shores of Yorkshire" floats like a dream as does "River of Genes" until the subtle shifts in tempo and riveting guitar work take the song to a different plane. "The Wolf" features lovely Mellotron soundscapes while the instrumental "Exobiology Part 2" is a fine space rock jam session.

Really, I just can't imagine any fan of psychedelic and space rock music not appreciating this fine platter from Professor Tip Top. My interest has been sufficiently piqued. Released on Apollon Records.
