Mads Tolling & The Mads Men: Playing the 60s

Mads Tolling is a rising star amongst violinists. Born in Denmark and now residing in the San Francisco Bay area, Tolling has an impressive musical pedigree having received a full scholarship to the Berklee College of Music and has studied and worked with some amazing musicians.

On his new solo album Playing the 60s, his fourth overall, Tolling reimagines some classics from the era and in the process takes his violin playing to new heights and he also has a terrific band backing him up.

Tolling rolls out the classics beginning with "A Taste of Honey" with a short and gentle piano and violin motif followed by a rousing classic jazz groove with the violin and piano playing off one another. The band doesn't take long to get into full swing. Next is "Meet the Flintstones/I Got Rhythm", well, what can I say? It's "Meet the Flintstones" for crying out loud, fleeting memories of school lunch hours and of years gone by. Tolling's violin solo is as impressive as the song's original melody. "My Girl" is highlighted by the warm vocal tone of Kalil Wilson and another infectious groove. These songs are all unmistakable and Tolling knows enough not to mess with a good thing while still putting his own unique spin on things. More highlights include "Mission: Impossible" with its outstanding bass courtesy of Sam Bevan and the original melody so ably pronounced with Tolling's incredible violin, the accordion backed "What a Wonderful World" with another impressive vocal performance this time by Kenny Washington and a bass heavy version of "Peter Gunn". Add the "Hawaii 5-0" theme and "The Pink Panther" and you truly have an impressive list of '60s classics all done with class and gusto.

Playing the 60s will not just bring back fond memories, it will take you to new and exciting places, the mark of an excellent album.
