Mos Generator: Abyssinia

Mos Generator is best known for heavy riffs and a broad musical range. The band's main man, Tony Reed, has a vast knowledge of classic rock (and many other styles) and draws on them freely to create songs that are familiar, intense, creative, and playful. I really liked the melodic guitar solos on tracks like "Time and Other Thieves" and "There's No Return From Nowhere." Reed's familiarity with 70s rock is on heavy display here and some of the tracks have that clean hard rocking sound that so many of us fell in love with at one time or another. Just listen to the uncanny familiarity of "Outlander" and you'll get a sense of what I mean. This is music that would have belonged on some of the best albums from another time. I was especially fond of the guitar solos on the second half of the album. They are clean and melodic and engaging. I can definitely see some of the reasons why this band gets so much love.

Even though I found much to like here, I found the album somewhat disappointing. There are times when the music moves away from its blend of energy and power and simply drifts. The performances are consistently good but the songwriting occasionally lags behind the power and roams into territories that are simply less interesting. Bands like this are born to experiment and I can't fault them for that. Still, this album was a rather mixed experience for me.
