Syk: I-Optikon

Most listeners will gravitate toward Dalila Kayros's vocals on this album. They are routinely loud, powerful, and strong. Strange to say, her vocals reminded me a little Bjork's style, especially from way back when she was still with the Sugarcubes. Syk is a metal band, but there's no denying the vocal similarities, especially when they reach within and then push out some of the most crazed and emotive passages. It's pretty intense. There are also times when Kayros simply rages, declaiming the words near the edges of the overall musical key. Listeners will likely be divided as to the quality of this vocal style. I liked it, but some will find it too intense and, sometimes, too out there. Check out "Mud" for a key example of how intense Kayros can be.

Behind the vocals, the other members of Syk play music that can be called a mixture of progressive, extreme, and experimental metal. It's hard to locate exactly what sound is dominant here. It's more avant garde than anything else and the overall sound is one of despair, anger, and nihilism. Overall, it makes for an interesting and harrowing listen that is sometimes enjoyable and sometimes overwhelming. I recommend checking out the title track for sure and maybe one or two other tracks ("Fong" is pretty good) just to get the feel for these guys.
