Killin' Kind: Dying Earth

Listening to the Dying Earth the second album of Italian metal group Killin' Kind the first thing that came to mind was how at times their vocalist reminds one of Rage's Peavy Wagner, and also like Rage Killin Kind have a powerful melodic style that should appeal to fans of that band. Killin'Kind however is not a trio but a four piece group, and so this group do have two guitarists. The band go all the way back to 1996, it was quite some time before their debut Metal Rage was released and then again until this new album Dying Earth was unveiled.

The songs on Dying Earth are quite catchy staring with "New Killing Breed" a pumping metal number with a soaring guitar solo and multiple tempo changes. That's what you find on Dying Earth as the band seems quite happy whether they are blazing away on the power thrasher "Raijinor" or slowing proceedings right down for the potent "The Legacy". One of Killin Kind's stronger attributes would have to be their guitar harmonies it's what makes you eagerly go back to tracks like the impressive instrumental "Fujin". Killing Kind kept the title track "Dying Earth" for the finale and it's also by far the longest song and one that builds slowly before the band brings that galloping metal. The download I received also has a bonus with a solid cover of the Mike Oldfield's "Moonlight Shadow" which sure does seem to be a popular choice for metal bands, and one that makes for a nice extra on this appealing new metal album.
