Bejerano, Martin: Trio Miami

There has been a flurry of jazz releases lately including Trio Miami from young pianist Martin Bejerano. Bejerano played under the tutelage of the legendary Roy Haynes who no doubt helped to shape his musical chops. Their album Fountain of Youth received a Grammy in 2004. His first solo album Evolution/Revolution came out in 2007, followed by Potential Energy in 2013.

Bejerano is joined by Josh Allen (bass) and Michael Piolet (drums) and the chemistry between these three musicians is outstanding. This is modern jazz, sometimes a little nostalgic with consummate musicianship and great melodies. A prime example is the opening tune "The Reckoning Song". Piano, bass and drums do a delicate dance before the equilibrium shifts towards more fervent play. Outbursts of sound heightens the drama as the trio delves into a cohesive tapestry of sound while still maintaining a strong sense of melody. The short "Entrance to Eden" has a lighter touch and serves as an intro to "Blood of Eden" where calming piano melodies merge with greater instrumental complexity and back and forth it goes highlighted by an excellent bass solo and fluid piano work. Piolet's drumming is both understated and intricate taking these songs wherever they need to go.

The strength in this album lies in the musician's ability to compose thoughtful melodies with dynamic instrumental interplay making Trio Miami another excellent jazz album. Highly recommended for fans of the genre.
