Townshend's, Pete Deep End: Face The Face (DVD/CD)

What can one say about the great Pete Townshend? His body of work speaks for itself, both with The Who and solo projects. His White City solo disc is a conceptual piece apparently inspired by Prince's (RIP) Purple Rain album. By the way I have always really liked the White City album and it has justifiably been highly regarded among fans and critics alike. As the album was gaining popularity Townshend decided to do a few live shows. Face The Face is a live two disc set consisting of a DVD/CD of his performance at the Chapiteau du MIDEM in Cannes, France. Here Townshend and his Deep End band put on a great show. Really some great players here including Peter Hope-Evans (harmonica), Chucho Merchan (bass), Simon Phillips (drums), John "Rabbit" Bundrick (keyboards), Jody Linscott (percussion) and special guest David Gilmour (guitar). Also playing is the six member horn section 'The Kick Horns' and five backup singers.

The concert kicks off with a bang with The Who classic "Won't Get Fooled Again", a very solid and powerful performance by all involved. The next tunes, taken from the White City album "Secondhand Love" and "Give Blood" are stellar with the former featuring Townshend's impassioned vocals and the latter letting Gilmour show why he has always been a great player laying down some wonderfully atmospheric guitar. The hits keep on coming; "Behind Blue Eyes", "Pinball Wizard", featuring just Pete's vocals and acoustic guitar and "Rough Boys" to name but a few. What makes Townshend's work so refreshing is his ability to rock out, the aforementioned "Won't Get Fooled Again" as a prime example or go in a more pop rock direction, the catchy "Slit Skirts" and "Hiding Out" being particularly effective. The band also pull out a Gilmour tune "Blue Light" taken from his About Face album. Again, Gilmour's guitar work is sublime.

The quality of the video and sound is very good and Townshend's vocals sound great through the entire performance. Really, if you are a fan of The Who or Townshend's solo output you will want this live recording in your collection. It's that simple.
