Wright, Gary & Wonderwheel: Ring Of Changes

Most classic rock aficionados know Gary Wright from his classic Dream Weaver album released in 1976 and his role in the band Spooky Tooth. However, many of you probably didn't know about the album Ring Of Changes scheduled for release in 1972 on A&M Records but was unceremoniously dropped by the label and relegated to the basement never seeing the light of day until forty odd years later. Enter Esoteric Records, which I might add have a fine ear for talent, to rescue this gem from relative obscurity.

On the album Wright (vocals, keyboards, guitar) is joined by Mick Jones (lead and acoustic guitar, vocals) of Foreigner fame, Ton Duffey (bass, vocals) and Bryson Graham (drums).

It really is a shame this album has taken so long to be heard as it could have been a big hit back in the day. If you love that early '70s classic bluesy rock sound you should try to get your hands on this one. The first track "Lovetaker" starts the disc off on fire with excellent guitar riffs and organ. The soulful vocals are the icing on the cake making this one of the catchiest tracks on the disc. "Wild Bird" is another early '70s gem with lovely keys, acoustic guitar and a bit of psychedelia thrown in. "Something For Us All" is a bluesy hard rock number while the lovely "Creation" has a softer feel reminding me of early '70s Eric Clapton. George Harrison guests on the endearing "Goodbye Sunday" with scrumptious slide guitar making The Beatles comparison fairly obvious. This is another melodic tune to savour. Every song has something to offer whether it be Wright's fabulous organ and keys, soulful vocals or Mick Jones' excellent guitar work played with feeling. The three bonus tracks are also noteworthy especially "I Know", a real searing rocker with nice acoustic rhythm guitar as well.

Ring Of Changes is a lost '70s gem that all music fans of that era should really enjoy. Sure it's a product of its time and I wouldn't want it any other way. Highly recommended.
