Buzzard Canyon: Hellfire and Whiskey

For all you heavy rock fans out there you might want to check out the debut album Hellfire and Whiskey by Buzzard Canyon hailing from Connecticut. The band is Amber Leigh (vocals), Aaron Lewis (vocals, guitars), Mike Parkyn (guitars), Randall Dumas (bass) and Matt Raftery (drums).

With a title like Hellfire and Whiskey you might expect heavily distorted riffs and an overall raw sound and that is exactly what you get. There is a sense of urgency here, very much a live feel and although the album is one dimensional, not straying very far off their chosen path of '70s style heavy rock with a splash of punk, the album is short and to the point so as not to wear out its welcome.

Songs like the distortedly heavy "For The End", the grungy guitar builds in the album opening "Highway Run" and the heavy barn burner "Red Beards Massacre" with Leigh's Chrissie Hynde-like vocals are good tracks. The production throughout the album is very raw and the vocals are set back in the mix. Leigh has a decent enough voice, good for the heavy style but I found Lewis' vocals a little too monotone for me although he does add some effective death growls on a few of the tracks.

Bottom line: if you are a fan of that heavy raw rock sound with some doom and stoner elements bandied about, Hellfire and Whiskey might be a nice diversion to get your blood pumping and adrenaline rising. They certainly have an abundance of energy which would transfer well to a live setting.
