Watchtower the progressive metal group comprising of guitarist Ron Jarzombek, drummer Rick Colaluca, bass player Doug Keyser and vocalist Alan Tecchio have released the mini album Concepts of Math: Book One. Quite the pioneers it's little wonder that Watchtower are said to have been quite an influence on other progressive groups as they formed in 1982. Yet the band have released just the two full length albums both back in the eighties, so it has been quite a wait for more of their technical wizardry. The musicianship on Concepts of Math: Book One is certainly at another level compared to so many other groups, these guys are just so insanely good. Concepts of Math: Book One may be only a five tracker although the closer "Mathematica Calculis" does run out over nine minutes and what a monster of a track it is. Watchtower open with the sole instrumental on Concepts of Math: Book One titled "M-Theory Overture" and despite it's wicked complexity the track is still catchy, and yes sure the music is of the technical kind on this release but it is also quite melodic. The vocals of Alan Tecchio are implemented cleverly and work very well with such busy compositions. Concepts of Math: Book One may be too much to digest for those with an appetite for more mainstream progressive groups but you should really give it a go. Whilst fans of Blotted Science and the like with relish this release and rightfully so. It may have been a long time coming but the Concepts of Math: Book One by this groundbreaking metal group really is something else.
