Tutti Colori Del Buio: Initiation into Nothingness

Most of the music on this album is straightforward hardcore played as abrasively as possible. I generally like contemporary hardcore even though I will always prefer the way bands did it in the 80s. For the most part, though, Tutti Colori Del Buio delivers effective and short angry bursts that have some strong riffs with just the right amount of distorted fuzz.

The most surprising thing about this album were its occasional departures from the formula. I'm especially thinking of the track "Tutti Color Del Buio," a complete surprise for me. This track, one of the album's best, is sonically darker and has a much slower tempo. It may be trying to capture the mood of the film from which the band takes its name—an Italian Giallo film that some people compare to the better-known Rosemary's Baby. There are some audio clips, presumably from the film, that come in about half way through the song. This track shows off a side to the band that I thought was not only a nice break from the hardcore tracks but also a hint of what else this band might do in the future.

As for the hardcore tracks, check out "Holiday in Mongolia." I don't hear tons of musical nods to the Dead Kennedy's "Holiday Inn Cambodia," but the title is obviously a playful reference to a punk classic.
