Herem: III

One of the first things people notice about Herem are Valendis Suomalainen's vocals. Although lots of vocalists growl, shriek, and rasp, there's something about her voice that just stands out from the rest. Part of the reason is because Herem mostly creates doom metal, a style that isn't traditionally known for its demonic vocals. And yet, Suomalainen's style suits the music here perfectly.

For those unfamiliar with Herem, the band has been going strong since 2005 and have released a combined total of three albums. The music bears a family resemblance to doom metal but there's also quite a bit of sludge and crust mixed into things for good measure. Aside from the vocals, listeners will probably be impressed by the band's overall sound. This is slow doom, pounding and dark. For any readers who think doom is getting boring, check out Herem. I thought this album was solid from start to finish and I'll have it on a steady rotation on my iphone for the next little while. Recommended.
