Dawnbringer: XX

Dawnbringer had its biggest success with 2010's Nucleus, an album that many people enjoyed. Since then, the band has been somewhat uneven in the quality of its work. With this release, a 5 song EP, the band continues that trend. Songs like "Earth" work pretty well but "Why Would You Leave Me" is much weaker by comparison. I was looking forward to hearing this release but I found it mostly disappointing.

The music here is largely concerned with death and with the sadness it brings. Those familiar themes have the potential to stir lots of different emotions but the music here is somewhat too upbeat. I know some bands have great success with depressing lyrics and happy music, but I don't think it suits Dawn bringer as much as it could.

When bandleader Chris Black was asked about Dawnbringer's future, he expressed gratitude that Nucleus did as well as it did, but he also indicated that some things weren't working as well as they might. He didn't elaborate much beyond that but the band might be poised for some changes. Interested listeners might want to check out "The End of the Beginning" or "Earth."
