Synthesizer virtuoso Steve Moore needs no introduction, his work in Zombi since 2001 has opened up the doors to electronic music & prog rock to a whole new generation of listeners who were too young to experience vintage acts like Tangerine Dream or Goblin. Like their heroes, the band have undertaken a host of sountrack scores over the years, but here we have Moore going solo for the music to the action/horror film The Mind's Eye, consisting of 85 minutes and 33 tracks of varied textures, tones, and colors. It's quite easy to resurrect some fond memories of all those old Italian horror film soundtracks while listening to The Mind's Eye, especially classic Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci, and Mario Bava films, as well as the works of John Carpenter and George Romero, Moore doing a great job of harnessing those early '80s soundtrack staples yet using modern technology to bring things into the present. There are some truly great synth passages here along with engaging arrangements, and while most tracks are short and just segue into each other, the mood does change a bit from track to track in many spots, though taking it all in as a whole seems to be the way to go. "Injections" is probably as close as Moore gets to a full on band sound, programmed drums & bass underscoring some bombastic synth melodies, while the majority of the rest of the tracks just do a splendid job of creating ominous mood & atmosphere yet still allowing the synths to dazzle and mystify.
As I haven't seen the film, I can't comment on how well this score fits in with the themes presented in the movie, but purely on its own, what is on display here is a fine example of modern electronic music with a healthy nod to the early '80s. Can't go wrong with that!
