Master of Cruelty: Archaic Visions of the Underworld

First of all, the cover art on this release is awesome. For some reason, it actually attached itself to a few other albums in my ITunes music folder. Normally, this kind of thing would annoy me, but I never really get tired of looking at all those skulls. The music on this album, the band's second, is raw and aggressive black and death metal played with fierce intensity and power. Fans of underground metal will love the way each song is not only firmly rooted in the style and substance of the underground but also that it has its own overall sense of style and purpose. When Master of Cruelty released its first album, Spit on the Holy Grail, fans of extreme metal were excited at the prospect of what this band could do. With this album, fans will be pleased. Some may find that the production quality of the album is low but fans of extreme metal don't always want spit and polish. Instead, they want music that captures the rawness of the black metal sound –something that Master of Cruelty delivers effectively. I enjoyed tracks like "Knowledge Beyond this Dimension" and "Archaic Visions of the Underworld," mostly because they were so raw and rhythmically intense.
