Here we have a split EP release between Virginia's Never Presence Forever and the New York solo act Gridfailure, which is the alter ego of David Brenner. The first two tracks are from the mysterious Never Presence Forever, and though I can't tell you much about these guys, they've been around for a long time and have put out a slew of releases since the late '90s. "Unwell" is 10-minutes of ambient/drone soundscapes, quite claustrophobic in its presentation, slowly building to a noisy climax, before giving way to the shorter and more chaotic "12205", the title oddly enough looks like a New York zip code and the sounds aren't far removed from what you might hear at any roadwork construction site around the state. Gridfailure's near 16-minute "Lifecycles Decay" delivers what you'd expect from the demented musical mind of Brenner, a chilling excursion into your worst nightmare, with evil lurking around every corner but never fully revealing itself, instead content to scare the shit out of you in anticipation of what might happen and allowing you to do the deed yourself. The manipulation of noise and vocal effects is brooding and terror inducing, something we've seen Brenner do quite well on previous releases.
All in all, this is 30 minutes well spent for any fan of avant-garde/ambient/drone extreme music.
