Recorded halfway between Las Vegas and Los Angeles on the San Manuel Reservation, one of the smallest Native American Indian reservations in the United States, Dog Faced Gods doesn't sound anything like Los Lobos gone metal. Instead, shards of Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, Alice in Chains and P.O.D. stick out like sonic broken glass on Stoned Council, DFG's debut CD. Taking their name from an old Testament song, these young men of Native American and Hispanic descent are as well schooled in classic rock as they are in modern alternative metal and even hip-hop - indeed, a rap version of the dark mid-tempo ballad "Stand Alone" closes Stoned Council. As a beginner, guitarist David "Snakeyez" Torres taught himself how to play Santana songs, and his thick and muggy Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan influences can be heard all over these 15 tracks. Meanwhile, singer Raymond "Shorty" Galvan's voice is rugged and grungy, and he lets the songs dictate his tone. Nevertheless, the rapping may wear thin on some listeners' musical patience. It's a shame that this decent effort does little to distinguish itself from every other band vying for attention on modern-rock radio these day. DFG has the vitality and the hunger to rise above …
