Hierophant: Mass Grave

At the end of the original Night of the Living Dead, audiences witness bodies being burned, buried, and moved with meat hooks. It's a brutal and terrifying conclusion to a movie that helped transform the Saturday matinee monster movie into something truly frightening. I won't compare this album to that film because they aren't trying to do the same thing but I can say that Mass Grave nevertheless captures a similar feeling of despair and dread, the kind that leaves audiences uncertain as to the power of hope. For the band, this album is nothing less than a musical reflection on the most frightening and disappointing bewildering qualities of human behavior. This album is dark through and through. For some listeners, it may even be the perfect soundtrack for 2016, a year of twists, turns, disappointments, deaths, and defeats.

Hierophant primarily plays death metal with heavy components of hardcore and grindcore added in as well. From start to finish, things are brutal and dark, a musical exploration of the dark corners of human behavior and the ways that ignorance and fear may take us there. The results are strong but rarely hopeful. The closing song, "Eternal Void," ends with a few minutes of noise. Maybe things won't end with a bang or a whimper but just a long passage of noise.
