Throcult: Stormbringer: Conjuration of the Nighthorde

If you were at all a fan of Throcult's previous outing Soldiers Of A Blackened War, you may at first be a little put off by this latest outing from the Colorado outfit (formerly a sextet, now a quartet) but multiple listenings of Stormbringer: Conjuration of the Nighthorde reveals that although Throcult may not be the most original blackened metal outfit out there, there's plenty of fascinating riffary going on between guitarists Ivan Alcala and Nick Johnson, who elevate tracks such as "Vortex Of Fire––Ashes Of Winter" and ""Blood Of Your Enemy" above the mundane. That said, one interesting fact remains about Stormbringer: Conjuration of the Nighthorde and that 's that some of the most interesting material arrives late in the affair––beginning with the title cut (the sixth track on this longplayer) and continuing onward toward "Stars Of Sirius," the LP's penultimate track. It's a curious decision in terms of the album's sequencing and perhaps one that impacts the overall quality of the disc, which is front-loaded with weaker, less dynamic material such as "Order Of The Lunar Temple" and "On Demon Wings." Let's hope that whatever Throcult gets up to next it's something that capitalizes on the promise this band has shown from the very beginning. A decent transitional album.
