With 2014's The Divination of Antiquity, UK black metal act Winterfylleth finally began to take the steps out of the metal underground and into more hallowed halls, and here they are two years later with a five track follow-up for Candlelight/Spinefarm titled The Dark Hereafter. The bands dark, textured, and ferocious nature is fully on display here in what is definitely not an EP (about 40 minutes of music), as lots of light & shade swirl around brutal arrangements steeped with melody and superb instrumentation. If it's blast beats and raging tremolo riffing you crave, look no further than the relentless title track, "Pariah's Path", and "Ensigns of Victory", while the lengthy "Green Cathedral" as well as the more melodic "Led Astray in the Forest" clearly show the bands progressive side, as chilling atmosphere drips in between intricate rhythms and plenty of guitar textures, the latter featuring dreamy clean vocals which drift along, providing for some variety from the normal savage vocal attack.
With a more than healthy nod to the Scandinavian greats, Winterfylleth have once again put together another satisfying platter of classic black metal here with The Dark Hereafter. Though there are so many bands pumping out this style of extreme metal these days, as they say 'the cream always rises to the top', and this band really delivers on a consistent basis. Recommended.
