With a career spanning three decades and more than fifty album credits to his name Scandinavian vocalist Goran Edman can rightfully claim to be one of the most prolific rockers of all time. Best known for his work in the AOR / melodic rock gene Edman has also sung on neo-classical and prog metal albums but Cry Of Dawn, his latest endeavour, is very much focused in the former category. The entire album comes across as very much a showcase for his rich, soulful and incredibly powerful voice which soars across the eleven tracks and it is no surprise to discover that this has been released on the Frontiers label.
Kicking off with one of the weakest tracks ('Chance') does not make for a promising start but things start to pick up with the anthemic 'When Right is Wrong' and the catchy chorus of 'Tell It To My Heart'. A double slice of 80's inspired lighter in the air ballads comes by way of 'Building Towers' and 'Hands Around My Heart' and the overall mood is heavy on keyboards and with songs that are geared around presenting Edman doing exactly what he does best. The press release sets the bar high in likening the album to Night Ranger, Bad English, Journey and Starship but nevertheless the overall verdict is that Cry Of Dawn offers a consistent slice of old school melodic rock.
