Holz, Bob: A Vision Forward

Jazz drummer Bob Holz has been around for decades as a professional drummer working with the likes of David Newman, Cornell Dupree, George Clinton/Parliament Psychedelic as well as many others.

His new group and album of the same name A vision Forward was released on July 8, 2016. There are some wonderful players adding their talent to the project like Randy Brecker (trumpet) and guitarists Larry Coryell, Bob Wolfman and Mike Stern.

The music on A Vision Forward is melodic contemporary jazz with the occasional nod to fusion. The rhythm section drives these tunes as Holz is an excellent time keeper with plenty of chops when called upon. The melodies are superb throughout and the musicianship is stellar. The guitar playing, in particular is outstanding as are the horns with some great solos scattered throughout. The opening tune "Moving Eyes" is on the smoother side of the spectrum with its easy flowing groove and female vocals giving it a '70s feel. Excellent fusion style guitar work picks up the pace. The title track features wonderful trumpet and sax and a short proggy keyboard break. The funky up-tempo jazz of "Mighty Mojo" features some fine keyboard and guitar solos while "Shared Sunsets" is much more reserved until a fantastic guitar solo rips up the soundscape.

A Vision Forward is a fine jazz release from a seasoned veteran with a cracker band behind him. I think a wide range of jazz fans will love this album. Highly recommended.
