Sherwood, Billy & Tony Kaye: Live In Japan

Billy Sherwood & Tony Kaye's Live In Japan was recorded in 2011. It makes sense the two toured together as both have been involved with Yes, Kaye as a co-founder and Sherwood as Yes's most recent member replacing the late great Chris Squire, RIP. After leaving Yes in 1971, Kaye played in the progressive rock band Badger and of course plays with Sherwood in his band Circa. He rejoined Yes in the '80s for the 90125 album. The songs represent both artist's quite well covering Yes, Circa, World Trade and Conspiracy, a band led by Sherwood and Squire.

The package comes with two CDs and a DVD. The song order is the same for both. After listening to these discs it became clear these two musicians are top notch. I know there is a lot of Sherwood bashing on progressive rock forums but there is no denying he knows his stuff and is an excellent player. His vocals are also more organic sounding than on some of his studio material which is a plus. As to be expected Kaye also does a great job whether providing moody layers or blistering solos. Highlights include the catchy "Time And A Word", the lovely "Your Move" featuring Kaye's bold keyboard strokes and Sherwood's intricate guitar work, the fabulous guitar in the lush "I Am Waiting" and the Yes classic "Wondrous Stories" where Sherwood lays down an excellent solo. Although only two musicians are on the stage the sound is quite full due to Sherwood prerecording his bass and drum parts.

My only complaint is the poor video quality of the DVD. Many of the shots are blurred which somewhat takes away from the duo's excellent performance. That aside, Live In Japan is certainly recommended to Yes fans and only reinforces just how good these musicians are.
