Wanderer is the eight studio album from German metalcore/melodic death metal act Heaven Shall Burn, and first without founding drummer Matthias Voigt, who has been replaced by Christian Bass. Would this signal an abrupt change in the bands sound you might ask? Certainly not, as Wanderer comes across as another in a fine line of solid Heaven Shall Burn albums, the formula quite familiar and welcome. The bruising riffs, twin harmonies, and blistering solos of Maik Weichert and
Alexander Dietz are ever present, charging through quality metal tracks like "They Shall Not Pass", "The Loss of Fury", and the rampaging "Prey to God", the latter featuring a great vocal duel between Eric Bischoff and Cannibal Corpse legend George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher. With 13 tracks, there's a lot of material on display here, and truth be told, Heaven Shall Burn were never all that good with varying their assault, so many of these tunes are pretty similar to each other, but most fans want full-speed ahead rippers, and that's what you get throughout Wanderer. While this new album isn't going to change the face of extreme metal by any means, it's all well crafted and executed, tunes such as "Save Me" and "Extermination Order" stacking up quite nicely against much of what the genre has to offer. Well done again, as always.
