King Buffalo: Orion

Here's an independent release from a new band that clearly warrants some extra attention. I don't have much information about the band, save that they tour regularly and have made a strong bond with the very popular All Them Witches. The songwriting on this album is especially impressive. Each track blends a little bit of fuzz with a small helping of doom and plenty of bluesy hard rock and stoner rock. I'm not familiar with the term "desert" to describe a band but King Buffalo's website offers up that term to that effect. More bluntly, King Buffalo sounds like a garage band that's figured out how to play effectively, write good music, and give fans something to enjoy. I was especially drawn to the moodier arpeggios on tracks like "Orion," "Monolith," "Goliath," and others. Those songs have song nice slow jams that take listeners to the killer riffs that eventually come and power everything up. The vocals are consistently clean and earnest but match the overall tone of the music. The closing track "Drinking from the River Rising," the longest track, deserves an extra listen. It's bluesy and heartfelt, a track that shows off the band's talents while also looking back, somewhat, to American roots music. This is a solid release from a talented band.
