Joseph Lamm + Music Hypnotica: Andean's Ascent

Joseph Lamm is an American artist who is hard to categorize. His new album Andean's Ascent is his fourth to date and I was unfamiliar of his work until now. Here he teams with Music Hypnotica consisting of David Price (keyboards, bass, drum programming, elixir & rhythm) and Elliot Lamm (acoustic, electric and slide guitar, piano, soundscapes). Joseph adds vocals, percussion, keyboards and electro-magnetic throat.

The album is a mixture of alternative rock, metal, electronica and trance. Lots of repetitive programmed beats, droning keyboards creating texture and mood and some pretty cool guitar riffs. The album begins with the trance-like "From the Sea" with its repeating keyboard drones and cool electronic effects. The sound eases off into mellower territory before building again into a pretty cool groove. The only negative for me are the background vocals which I found more distracting than anything else.

Two of the catchiest tracks are "Elastic Stomp" with its razor sharp guitar riffs and "Blue Sky Trance (into the never never)" featuring a heavy ethnic sounding beat and more excellent guitar work.

One of the best tunes is "Challenge" which had me thinking Pink Floyd with its clean guitar and rhythmic outbursts.

Andean's Ascent is a pretty decent effort and is totally different than what I normally listen to. My only real complaint are the vocals as they seem unneeded at certain times. However, if you are into heavy trance music you should probably give this one a listen.
