Fadini, Alessandro: A Dark and Stormy Day

Alessandro Fadini is an Italian jazz pianist who after having spent some time in France working with other musicians with a similar mindset moved to New York City in 2011. His debut album A Dark And Stormy Day has recently been released. His band includes Josiah Boornazian (alto and soprano sax, sax overdubs), Jakob Dreyer (bass) and Luke Markham (drums).

One thing is for sure, these guys can play. Fadini's penchant for improvisation comes through in a big way but he lets the entire band show their stuff with some great soloing throughout. The mind blowing second track "It Was a Dark and Stormy Day" features some dazzling musicianship including dynamic piano and saxophone solos ripped over a stellar drum and bass groove. The interesting rhythmic pattern in "Juno" as well as some great bass work and wonderful sax including overdubs will certainly turn some heads as will the first track "Introduction to a Dark and Stormy Day" featuring only sax and subtle cymbals. On "No Thrills (I)" the piano is slightly sentimental before it breaks into "Part (II)" where the playing reaches a fever pitch as the instruments seem to come from every conceivable angle. It is hard to single out any one musician as they are all top shelf players.

Fadini and his band are pushing modern jazz in new and unexpected directions with A Dark and Stormy Day. All fans of contemporary jazz should be on the lookout for this one. Released on Fresh Sound Records.
