King Company: One for the Road

King Company is a relatively new band being formed in the early spring of 2014. Drummer Mirka "Leka" Rantanen (Raskasta Joulua, Warmen, ex-Thunderstone, ex-Kotipelto, etc.) wanted to play with people with whom he had worked before and who he knew as both good musicians and considered friends. Therfore he contacted guitarist Antti Wirman (Warmen) who immediately joined the band. The singer Pasi Rantanen was in Mirka's mind from the beginning, as they had played together in a couple of bands before (Thunderstone, Warmen). After keyboardist Jari Pailamo (Kiuas, Ponies To Kill) and bassist Time Schleifer (Enfarce) joined the band, things were in a go situation.

Unlike much of Frontiers recent releases King Company don't hark back to the 1980s. Oh no siree, they hark back to the 1970s and comparisons with Rainbow, Deep Purple are evident from the first chord of the opening title track. Pasi Rantanen's voice has distinct echoes of a younger Joe Lynn Turner (this is a good thing obviously.)Occasionally there's a sense that the hard rock crunch and groove are more important than a memorable tune - yes that's you I'm pointing at "Shining" but this is a more than adequate 70s-vibed hard rock album. Deeply unfashionable 70s rock at that but certainly worth investigating.
