Steely Dan: Green Flower Street

Walter Becker and Donald Fagan, otherwise known as Steely Dan, should need no introduction on these pages. Their work through the '70s and early '80s is exemplary with classic album after classic album. I have been a fan since the release of Aja and the band have never disappointed. When I received Green Flower Street in the mail I was excited to hear some 'new' music. I use the word new in a loose context as this is a radio broadcast of a concert recorded for radio on September 1, 1993.

The band sounds great and all the classics are here. The disc opens with the instrumental medley "The Royal Scam/Bad Sneakers/Aja" featuring those great melodies which any fan of Steely Dan will be acutely aware of. The playing amongst the band members is stellar, from the tasty sax and guitar work to the tantalizing keyboards. "Green Earrings", taken from The Royal Scam, is another wonderful piece showcasing sax and piano solos. Other great cuts include the jazz rock rave up of "Bodhisattva", the slick and infectious "I.G.Y." and the irresistible "Hey Nineteen".

Spread over two discs, this is timeless music from a band that has achieved legendary status. My only gripe is the sparse CD insert that lacks recording information. Other than that, this is pure gold.
