Cohen, Avishai: Into the Silence

Avishai Cohen is a young New York jazz musician specializing in trumpet. Into The Silence is his debut album as band leader for ECM Records. The album is a personal reflection on the passing of Cohen's father in 2014. Joining Cohen are Eric Revis (bass), Yonathan Avishai (piano), Nasheet Waits (drums) and Bill McHenry (tenor sax).

This is a wonderful album and a deeply personal statement from Cohen. Given the subject matter the mood is not jovial by any means but I wouldn't say this is depressing music either. Serene and thoughtful are two words that come to mind. Cohen has a pure organic tone that melds naturally within the band's sound. Songs like the relaxing "Behind the Broken Glass" with excellent trumpet and saxophone and the pretty "Quiescence" are lovely pieces that showcase the quintet's ability to form restraint when the need arises. In particular, Waits shows a subtle deft of hand as his light as a feather cymbal work is really quite mesmerizing. On the opening track "Life and Death" the mood is more mournful with slow and languid trumpet lines accompanied by gentle brush strokes. The mood is a little more upbeat on "Dream Like a Child" showcasing Waits' outstanding drumming. His rolls and fills are certainly chop worthy but he never lets his stick work take over the piece.

Into the Silence is a lovely contemporary jazz album with a yearning mood and atmosphere like no other I have heard thus far in 2016. If you like your jazz on a softer note I highly suggest you give this one a listen.
