True Widow: Avvolgere

The last time True Widow released an album, the terrific Circumambulation, I discovered a band that I couldn't enjoy enough. Even though some listeners may not enjoy the band's heavy and moody take on shoegaze (they call it stonegaze), this band routinely kicks up rhythmic and melodic qualities that are striking and powerful. After falling in love with Circumambulation, I reached back to the band's other material and found myself more impressed with what I heard. Here is a band I'll enjoy for years to come.

I hope it doesn't seem strange to say that I listen to this band whenever I'm in motion: walking, driving, even flying. I once had the opportunity to play "Four Teeth" on a radio program called "Through the Garage Door." I wanted everyone to hear a band that I have long enjoyed. What's the quality that keeps me turning back to True Widow? It has something to do with the way the sound, the rhythm, and the melodies invite contemplation; this is music for wandering thoughts and shifting moods. The songs mesmerize and fascinate but the result is never a passive reception but a positive appreciation. Just check out the distorted guitars and the ever-accurate drums. When I caught the band live a couple of years ago, I was especially impressed with Slim TX's drumming—he plays with an uncanny and powerful accuracy, one that manifests itself in his movements. He is the pulse of this band. As for D. H. Phillips and Nicole Estill, they provide the haunting melodies and do so with melancholy, mystery, and beauty. True Widow is a terrific band, one that more people need to discover.

This album might do the trick. The music builds on the best moments of Circumambulation but it comes off as darker and heavier. There's always one track on True Widow albums that I simply can't shake. This album has two: "Grey Erasure" and "What Finds Me." I'll have this album on rotation for a long time. Check it out—and be sure to catch True Widow on the road.
