D-A: Red Pigs

D-A, aka Antti 'Dee' Heikkinen is a Finnish multi-instrumentalist who has been making music since the '80s, more as a hobby than as a career. As a band he has released three E.P.s and recorded one full length album only to have the record company go bankrupt. Apparently his new album Red Pigs is his seventh overall (you can find some of his stuff on Spotify). This is truly an artist who is doing it all himself as the new album was composed, recorded and mixed by the musician in his home studio. Heikkinen plays most instruments but does have three guest musicians contributing on a few tracks.

There are some great guitar sounds here beginning with the first track "Escapes". The tempo changes and intense lead vocals has a slight chaotic sound and the background synths are subtle yet effective. "Blackstar" is another heavy burner with almost neoclassical guitar stylings and chugging riffs. The vocals are not as harsh and there is a general moodiness at play. Heikkinen's sense of humour comes through in the punk influenced "T-V-A" whereas "King of Pain" is a slow burning blues influenced rock tune. The catchy "Baby Got Back" is more traditional hard rock while "Life Goes On" features a nice mixture of acoustic and electric guitar bringing to mind Led Zeppelin in their glory days.

Red Pigs is an impressive Scandinavian rock album with some killer riffs and excellent lead vocals from an individual who deserves to be heard. If you like what you hear please do what you can to support independent artists.
